Lessons in Sustained Leadership from Michael Polk’s Decades in Business

A career that spans Procter & Gamble, Kraft Foods, Unilever, Newell Rubbermaid, and Implus offers something more than an impressive list of employers. It offers a long record from which meaningful lessons about sustained leadership can be drawn. Michael Polk’s career is exactly that kind of record.

Polk has spoken about the importance of formative early experiences, and his own fit that description. His first job out of Cornell placed him on the floor of a paper mill in Pennsylvania, supervising production on night and weekend shifts. He was candid about how little he knew going in and how much he learned about the nature of organizational interdependence. That lesson, absorbed at the very start of his career, echoed through every subsequent leadership role.

His time at Harvard Business School accelerated the transition from technical work to general management, and a long tenure at Kraft Foods gave him experience running major divisions and navigating a high-profile acquisition. At Unilever, he moved up quickly, eventually overseeing all of the company’s brands and operations across the Americas before shifting to a global role in London. That breadth of experience made him a credible candidate for the CEO role at Newell Rubbermaid, which he accepted in 2011.

Consistency as a Competitive Advantage

Over eight years at Newell, Michael Polk Newell Brands met or exceeded external earnings guidance in 30 of 32 quarters. He grew the company’s net sales from $5.4 billion to $9.4 billion, nearly tripled its enterprise value, and grew the dividend by 253%. Those numbers reflect not one or two exceptional years but a consistent pattern of disciplined execution.

After retiring from Newell in 2019, Polk returned to work the following year at Implus, a fitness accessories company backed by Berkshire Partners, where he continues to serve as CEO. He has said that each chapter of his career helped him grow as a leader. The chapter count, it appears, is still growing. Refer to this article for related information.
