Running one of North America’s largest energy companies would fill most calendars. Kelcy Warren, who founded Energy Transfer and serves as its executive chairman, also holds seats on boards that oversee a Dallas park, a state university system, and a national performing arts center.
Three Very Different Boards
Governor Greg Abbott appointed Kelcy Warren to the University of Texas System Board of Regents, with a term running through 2025. That role gives him a voice in the governance of a public university system that includes his alma mater, the University of Texas at Arlington, where he graduated in 1978.
He was appointed to the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees in 2019. Closer to home, he serves on the board of the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation.
Each appointment connects to causes he has backed financially. His $10 million donation in 2012 was instrumental in creating Klyde Warren Park, a 5.2-acre space reconnecting uptown and downtown Dallas. A more recent $20 million gift is funding the park’s expansion and additional free public programming.
Money and Service Together
His work with the UT System follows decades of giving to UTA. Before 2023, he had donated $4 million across 10 gifts spanning 25 years. Then he gave $12 million, the largest single donation in the school’s history, to support its resource and energy engineering program.
“Texas faces a critical need for highly skilled graduates who can manage energy resources, and this innovative REE program will help meet that demand,” Warren said.
His philanthropy reaches past the boards he sits on. Kelcy Warren supports the Bush Foundation, MD Anderson Cancer Center, the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, and the March of Dimes. Since 2018, a partnership between Energy Transfer and the Texas Rangers has allowed him to support the West Dallas Youth Academy.
Energy Transfer runs more than 130,000 miles of pipeline and related infrastructure in 44 states, moving natural gas, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and refined products. Its founder has paired that corporate role with a public one, lending both money and time to institutions in Texas and Washington. Refer to this article for related information.
