Long before Energy Transfer became a midstream giant, Kelcy Warren was a fresh graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington weighing his job prospects. He chose the strongest one he had, a position with the Lone Star Gas Co. That practical decision put the East Texas native on a road that would eventually lead to a pipeline empire.
Hart Energy recounted the journey in a 2023 profile honoring Kelcy Warren as part of its 50th anniversary Hall of Fame series.
The Endevco Turning Point
After Lone Star Gas, Warren moved to Endevco, a pipeline and refining business. The company ran into financial trouble, and Warren was assigned to help find a buyer. That search introduced him to two investors, Ray C. Davis and Ben Cook.
Rather than simply handing Endevco off, the three teamed up and bought it themselves. They rebranded the business and later sold it at a healthy profit. Much of that money went toward launching Energy Transfer in 1996. The new company began with about 200 miles of natural gas pipelines in East Texas.
Two Partners, Two Roles
Davis, who now owns the Texas Rangers baseball team, concentrated on business operations in those early years. Kelcy Warren took the long view. He pictured a continent-spanning web of pipelines and export hubs well before it existed. Davis once described his partner to the Houston Chronicle this way “Kelcy doesn’t think like other people. He sees possibilities where others don’t.”
Warren grew up around the trade. He was raised in Gladewater and White Oak in rural East Texas, and his father worked as a pipeline field hand for Sunoco. Energy Transfer would buy that company in 2012 for $5.3 billion.
From its modest starting footprint, the company expanded through a combination of new construction, including the Dakota Access Pipeline, and a long list of acquisitions. Kelcy Warren still leads that effort today as executive chairman, and he continues to pursue new deals that extend the network he set out to build decades ago.
