Margarita Howard’s Leadership Drives HX5’s Growth in Government Contracting

In 2004, Margarita Howard founded HX5, a company dedicated to providing mission support services
to federal space and defense agencies. Over the past two decades, HX5 has
evolved into a trusted partner for numerous government clients, offering
software and hardware engineering, mission operations support, information
technology, and research and development.

Margarita Howard’s strategic decision to enter the Small Business Administration’s
8(a) program played a pivotal role in HX5’s early success. The program allowed
HX5 to secure several significant contracts, setting the stage for its rapid
growth. “After becoming an 8(a) company, we were awarded four contracts in
one year,” Howard recalls, highlighting the importance of this
accreditation in HX5’s initial phase.

However, Howard aimed for more than just temporary success through set-aside contracts. She
prioritized building a resilient company that could compete independently in
the highly competitive government contracting landscape. “We made the
decision very early on that we wanted to compete,” says Howard. This
commitment led HX5 to invest in industry-recognized accounting systems and other essential
infrastructure, making the company an attractive partner for larger businesses.

Navigating a male-dominated industry presented additional challenges for Howard.
Nevertheless, she maintained a focus on professionalism, allowing her to
establish credibility and influence. Howard’s leadership extends beyond gender
barriers; she has been instrumental in promoting diversity within HX5, with
women holding a majority of the management positions.

Today, HX5 boasts over 1,000 employees across 34 states, reflecting the company’s sustained growth and
commitment to excellence. Margarita Howard’s blend of strategic foresight and
dedication to her team has firmly positioned HX5 as a formidable player in the
government contracting arena.

Howard’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. She has received accolades such as the
SBA Minority Small Business Person of the Year for SBA National Region 4 in
2012 and the SBA North Florida Woman-Owned Small Business Person of the Year in
2015. Her leadership continues to drive HX5 forward, ensuring its ongoing
success and impact in the industry. Read this article for additional information.
