Matthew Fleeger did not walk into the corner office at Gulf Coast Western. He earned his start in the mid-1980s after finishing a business administration degree at Southern Methodist University, then spent eight years learning the oil and gas trade at the company his father had founded. During that stretch he moved through management, finance, sales, and marketing roles, building the kind of broad operational knowledge that would later shape how he ran the firm.
A Detour Before Taking the Helm
Fleeger’s career did not move in a straight line. He left the oil and gas industry for several years to start a medical waste management company, which he eventually sold to Stericycle. Only after that exit did he return to Gulf Coast Western, bringing an outside perspective on mergers, acquisitions, and corporate structure that most lifelong industry veterans never develop.
In 2009, when his father retired, Fleeger stepped into the CEO role at Gulf Coast Western. The company had already spent decades operating along the U.S. Gulf Coast since its 1970 founding, and Fleeger set about expanding it further through a mix of acquisitions and new partnerships. Under his direction, the firm’s footprint now spans Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado.
Colleagues and investors point to his emphasis on investor communication as a defining trait of his leadership. Fleeger has said education is an investor’s best defense against fraud, and he requires the company’s investor-facing staff to explain both the downsides and the potential rewards of every joint venture opportunity in full. He also frequently gets personally involved in helping partners weigh individual investment decisions.
That hands-on approach has helped Gulf Coast Western earn an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and a strong record of five-star reviews. For a company built on repeat investor relationships, Fleeger’s background in both operations and finance appears to have shaped a leadership style that prioritizes clarity over sales pressure.
