Long before he led a multibillion dollar company, Michael Polk Newell Brands spent his early career days on a factory floor, learning lessons he would carry for the rest of his professional life. After graduating from Cornell University in 1982, he accepted an offer from Procter & Gamble to work in the company’s paper mill in northeastern Pennsylvania.
The job placed him as a supervisor on one of seven papermaking machines, working a demanding seven day swing shift. Polk has admitted he knew little about papermaking or what the schedule would require when he accepted the position. Still, he took the job and immersed himself in the work.
Lessons From The Factory Floor
Michael Polk later described this period as one of the most formative stretches of his career. Polk learned a great deal about his own capabilities and gaps, and about how much his future success would depend on the support of others around him. The experience also taught him to respect the different roles within a manufacturing or business system, given how interconnected each function proved to be.
After two years in Pennsylvania manufacturing, Polk spent a year in research and development in Cincinnati, Ohio, rounding out his time at Procter & Gamble. He then returned to school for an MBA at Harvard Business School, a step that opened the door to marketing and general management roles he would hold for the rest of his career.
That early exposure to plant operations gave Michael Polk a perspective many executives never develop firsthand. It informed his later work restructuring Newell Rubbermaid, where he had to understand manufacturing, sales, and corporate functions together while running the company as chief executive.
