Justin Fulcher was nineteen years old when he started coding the prototype that would become RingMD, a telehealth platform that eventually operated in more than fifty countries. He had no company name, no investor materials, and no formal plan. What he had was a problem he could not stop thinking about after months of travel through Southeast Asia.
“At the time, I wasn’t thinking about building a company. I was thinking about big problems to solve,” Justin Fulcher said. He had noticed a pattern repeating across the region: people carried smartphones and had internet access, yet meaningful healthcare remained out of reach. That gap looked solvable with the tools already in people’s pockets, so he began building.
An Idea Before a Company
Fulcher describes the sequence plainly. “The idea came first. The company came later.” RingMD did not start as a business plan chasing a market opening. It started as a working prototype built to answer one specific question about connecting patients to care across distance.
That order shaped how RingMD grew. Rather than raising money around a pitch deck, Justin Fulcher built functional first and let the company structure follow from what the technology could actually do. The platform eventually supported clinicians and patients across dozens of countries, each with its own regulatory environment and healthcare system.
From Prototype to Platform
What began as a teenager’s response to an obvious gap became one of the more expansive telehealth operations to launch out of the region. Justin Fulcher has since pointed to that early instinct, building toward a real problem instead of a business model, as the thread connecting his healthcare work to his later roles in public service.
